Initial Concepts and Planning
The most important part of building a motorhome is carefully selecting between your wants and needs!
While it would be nice to afford the most expensive motorhome on the market, the chances are that it would not fulfil all your needs and requirements!
I spent several years investigating thoroughly for the best all-round compromise to best suit my budget and needs.
Motorhomers generally fall into several categories.
- Holiday/Seasonal Travellers
- Wunsa Rounda Stralia
- Permanent Onsites
- Casual Nomads
- Fulltime Nomads
Holiday/Seasonal Travellers
These folk tend to pack up every Easter or Summer and travel a pre-planned route, often staying in Caravan Parks along the way. Here we find a lot of the "Coasters", and B & C Class motorhomes, often packed to the rafters with kids, pets, and camping gear.
Wunsa Rounda Stralia
This is usually the well planned motorhome, generally the converted school bus for the younger family, and often a purpose build "Winnebago" or "Coaster" for the "Grey Nomads". These are the units generally advertised on eBay or other internet sites as being "for-sale". They have done the "Around Australia Once" trip, and now want to sell the motorhome at an enormously inflated price, to put a deposit on a home instead.
Permanent Onsites
These are often "Around Australia Oncers" who either could not afford to travel further, or simply "Fell in love with the place" stayers. In the majority of cases these are older converted bus or truck motorhomes, frequently attached to semi-permanent annexes. They aint going anywhere in a hurry.
Casual Nomads
Casual nomads are either semi-retired, or keen to travel when ever they can. The Casual Nomads has a home base and travels around with no concrete destination other than the remaining travel time available. These folk are either still working or have business and family commitments, and are just waiting to become Fulltime Nomads. Casual Nomads can often be spotted at the head of a line of traffic towing the dreaded caravan while dodging Wombats.
Fulltime Nomads
The top end of the scale. Full time nomads have either retired, or simply earn as they travel. Often with a "base camp" they visit every years or so, Fulltime Nomads have sold up, cashed up, and are travelling around with no particular fixed destination or timetable in mind. These folk often tell the time in seasons or months instead of hours or minutes. ie: "We will be there around September-December!" Full time Nomads rule.
Essentially, you need to decide what type of travelling you will be doing, before you buy or build your motorhome!
